Climate change is not just changing our environment, its consequences have become a reality for trillions of people globally. It is usually women and girls that struggle to pull through and recover from the after-effects.

Here are five stories from around the world on how climate change is affecting women and girls; 

1.  Climate change-related disasters have worsened the vulnerabilities of women and girls as essential health services which include access to health facilities for childbirth, access to family planning,  and other life-saving interventions are neglected during such times.

2. Climate change has also affected the production and businesses of small-scale women farmers in Nigeria.

3. Gender and climate change are integrally linked, climate change has worsened the plights of women. Climate change also has more impact on women than men, a report showed.

4. The International Day of Indigenous Women celebrated annually on 5 September is a reminder that indigenous women are vital to climate action.

5. Participation of women and girls, and other marginalized groups, is central to a successful COP26. Also, one of the UK’s four goals for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) is Galvanizing action to support countries and communities on the front line of climate change.
