Dubai: Three Women Face Three-Year Jail Time for Trying to Sell Baby Online for Dh12,000

Three women who attempted to sell a baby boy in Dubai for Dh12,000 have been arrested and taken to jail.

The Dubai Criminal Court claims that the events leading up to the ambush happened in February 2021, after social media users had tipped off police.

A police officer testified that the kid was less than two months old and that the mother had advertised the baby for sale on social media. Even the mother was on board with selling the baby to the undercover cop.

The second suspect agreed to pick up the baby from his mother, and the third was supposed to meet him in the Jumeirah area to take custody of the child. However, the police set up a plan and arrested all three suspects.

The child's mother admitted to having an extramarital affair and trying to sell the baby for financial reasons during their interrogation.

After finishing their three-year prison terms, all three accused will be deported. Specialised infant care is being arranged for the newborn.

According to the 2021 Trafficking in Persons Report: United Arab Emirates, the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) does not fully meet the minimum standards for eliminating trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so.

In this light, and per international best practices and standards, as well as UAE law, the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children has developed victim-centred support programs for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking.

The Domestic Violence and Counter-Trafficking Support Programs at DFWAC are two examples of how the Foundation is working to meet the needs of victims better, as well as to advocate for and protect those victims' interests and rights.
