Feminist Coalition Launches Farming Initiative
The Feminist Coalition has launched a farming initiative in partnership with Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Ltd to empower low-income women across Nigeria.
On Friday, the women's advocacy group released a statement saying "the Noiler team is providing consistent poultry rearing training for all beneficiaries."
"We partnered with Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Ltd, a Nigerian poultry company that created the Noiler Chicken. The Noiler Chicken is a dual-purpose chicken breed that produces 4 times more eggs and 3 times more meat than other chicken breeds native to Nigeria," the group said in a Medium post. "Amo Farms developed this breed to address issues of infant and maternal mortality, food insecurity and hunger, especially among women and children."
Ten women are the first beneficiaries of the pilot initiative, which launched in June. The group disclosed that each woman received 20 chicks, "so they can rear some for the sale and keep some for their own consumption, while using part of their revenue to purchase more Noiler chicks."
Data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shows that women constitute over 60 per cent of the poorest people in Nigeria, translating to over 57 million women living in extreme poverty and the World Bank pegs 95.1 million Nigerians as living in extreme poverty.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic placed further structural and systemic limitations at household and country levels keep restricting women and the economic growth of the nation.
