FIFA WORLD CUP 2023: Germany Defeats Morocco 6-0 At the Women's World Cup

On Monday, Germany defeated Morocco 6-0 in its Women's World Cup debut, with Alexandra Popp scoring twice in the first half, and four more goals coming in the second.

The two-time champions easily defeated Morocco, the first Arab and North African country to qualify for the tournament, with the highest margin of victory in the tournament so far.

With her 63rd and 64th goals for Germany, Popp is now Germany's third all-time. The Wolfsburg forward made an immediate impact despite missing the 2022 European Championship final against England due to injury.

In the second half, two Moroccan own goals were nested between goals scored by Klara Bühl and Lea Schüller.

Popp scored after a cross from Kathrin Hendrich in the eleventh minute with a header. In the 39th, she headed in Klara Bühl's corner kick for her second.

Right-footed Bühl scored the third goal 23 seconds into the second half. Svenja Huth scored the fourth goal in the 54th after a corner rebound. Hanane Aït El Haj's own goal followed.

Yasmin Mrabet scored another own goal before Lea Schüller scored in the 90th minute for Germany.

The World Cup champions of 2003 and 2007 have reached the semifinals or better in each of their eight previous World Cup appearances. Group H is currently being led by Germany, with Tuesday's opening matches between Colombia and South Korea up next.

As a result of this crushing defeat, the Moroccans will be under even more pressure to win the rest of their group-stage matches and advance to the tournament's elimination round.
