Ghanaian Law graduate denied admission to Bar over affiliation with the Queer community

Ama Governor, a Ghanaian socialite and law graduate, has reportedly been denied admission to the bar because she supports and identifies with the LGBTQ community.

Ama Governor subtly confirmed the news as she took to Twitter to rant about her rights being trampled upon.

"Meanwhile every citizen has a constitutional right to not be punished unless the act they’re punishing you for was defined on a written law and the penalty for it prescribed at B the time of the commission of the act. Otherwise, it’s unconstitutional. That’s what I learnt in law," she tweeted.

According to Ditabhey media, in addition to her sexual orientation, Ama's multiple body piercings and tattoos were other factors in her LLM application being rejected after six years of intensive study.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) denied her the opportunity to practice law because she was accused of not being devoted to becoming a lawyer in good standing. Unidentified individuals reportedly filed a petition against her, resulting in a punitive judgment against her, as reported by local media.

Ama and some of her acquaintances resorted to social media to protest the Ghana Bar Association's decision. She stated that it was improper and unjust for the GBA to restrict her from becoming a lawyer after passing all of her tests.

In the meantime, a bill has been introduced that, if passed, will effectively criminalize and prosecute all LGBTQ-related activities in Ghana.
