20 Women Victims of Fatal Violence by Male Relatives in Iran
Parisa Mohammadi, 37, from the Caspian city of Babol; Hadis Islami, 26, from Mashhad, in the country's northeast; and Hamideh Sharifat, 40, from the southwestern city of Omidiyeh, were the most recent victims of domestic violence deaths in Iran.
Their deaths were a sombre reminder of the pervasiveness of domestic abuse in Iran and the pressing need for more public awareness and preventive measures.
The Iranian media reported on October 30 that Parisa Mohammadi's husband had stabbed her to death in Babol during a "family dispute."
IranWire was told by a reliable source that Mohammadi was the second wife of a wealthy man named Farzad, aged 60, and that she ran a successful hair salon.
"The fact that Farzad first took the life of his wife and then her elderly mother, both through stabbing, before turning the weapon on himself, raises questions about potential financial disputes within the family," the source said.
The source pointed out that Mohammadi's financial situation was generally sound, although she had experienced some difficulties recently.
Hadis Islami, 26 at the time, worked as a wedding videographer, according to information collected by IranWire.
On October 21st, her relatives reported her missing.
According to the Shahrara News, a judge in Mashhad named Mahmoud Arefi Rad said, "following thorough technical and investigative procedures, the husband of this young woman has been apprehended as one of the suspects involved in the murder."
According to witnesses, the spouse admitted to the murder.
A second suspect's arrest was also reported by the court official, although the identity of the murderer is currently unknown. A source close to the case claims that when Islami returned home from work, she called her husband to ask him to open the door.
The young woman then vanished. Her vehicle was located on Zed Square in Mashhad, while her phone was located on a highway.
According to the report, Islami was killed by a close-range shot to the head in a private garden, and her body was later buried on the Khin Arab road in Mashhad, about a kilometre away.
Her husband gave the burial place to the authorities, according to the source.
Hamideh Sharifat, a 40-year-old mother of two teen girls, was killed by her brother in the last week of October. He shot her three times.
According to IranWire, Sharifat was pressured into remarrying her cousin, whom she had previously divorced one to two years prior.
She and her two daughters shared an apartment. Sharifat was killed because her brother suspected she had separated from her husband because she was having an affair with another man.
The family decided to stay quiet and be complicit in the murder.
Sharifat was buried at a cemetery set aside for the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic, and her death was treated as an accident.
