NCSW Urges Non-discriminatory Framework for Women Ahead of 2024 Pakistani Elections
To guarantee that women and girls may participate in the next elections in a safe, secure, unbiased, and non-discriminatory environment, the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) has asked all government agencies to take the necessary measures.
The group issued a statement stressing the critical importance of fully implementing the national narrative of women's empowerment, which is predicated on the principles of gender equality, equal rights, and equal opportunity.
The above-mentioned opportunities are required “so that nowhere, women be discriminated against and nowhere should they face harassment or violence”.
Since elections are quickly approaching, the National Council of Social Workers (NCSW) argues that state institutions should prioritise protecting women and girls so that they can cast their votes in an inclusive and safe environment free from discrimination.
In light of Pakistan's international obligations (CEDAW) and the provisions of Article 25 of the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan, the statement emphasized the need for the state apparatus to guarantee the full participation of women and girls in the forthcoming elections. All government officials are hereby obligated to treat women candidates, supporters, voters, polling agents, and staff with fairness and impartiality, allowing them to freely exercise their right to vote.
“Appropriate measures may be taken to curb the instances of harassment and violence, especially, hate speech against women during the election campaign and on the polling day.”
The statement continued by noting that achieving gender parity and empowering women is not only the right thing to do, but also a key driver of progress in the country's politics, economy, culture, and society.
