Nikki Haley Wins Washington DC Republican Primary Over Donald Trump
Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley emerged victorious in the Republican primary in Washington, DC, over Donald Trump.
The BBC reports that she, however, lost in her native state of South Carolina. She nevertheless became the first female Republican primary winner in the United States.
Former US President Trump, on the other hand, is light years ahead of Haley and will likely face Joe Biden in November.
According to the numbers, Haley would win all nineteen Republican delegates in the nation's capital, giving her 43 delegates overall, much less than Trump's 247.
In the nation's capital, Haley received 62.9% of the vote, while Trump received 33.2%.
Given that the nation's capital is a Democrat stronghold and that there are only approximately 23,000 Republicans living there, the victory is considered as mostly symbolic.
The Washington Post stated that 2,035 Republicans participated in the primary, according to local party leaders.
Haley’s campaign national spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas, said: “It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos”.
On Tuesday, voters in fifteen states and one US territory will choose a candidate for the Republican nomination, and Trump is expected to win even more delegates than he did in any of the previous state primaries or caucuses. With the support of 874 Republican delegates at stake, it is the most important day of setting contests.
