Nollywood actress, Kanyin Eros, is releasing a short video series titled The Secret Lives of Nigerian Women inspired by the pressing need to document the untold stories of iconic and political women figures in Nigerian history.
Produced by Guguru Media, a talent management and film production company based in Lekki, Lagos, the short video series is poised to familiarise Nigerians with the history of iconic Nigerian women whilst also pushing Eros’ depth as an actor and storyteller.
Reflecting on the intention behind the series, Eros echoes the not-popular opinion that while commentary and attention is often given about the women’s bravery and defiance of patriarchal narrative, attention isn’t given to their humanity. Thus, the video series is an attempt not just to reiterate the bravery of these women but to humanise them.
“As much as we commend their bravery, they are regular human beings who wanted change and goodness for the society, hence, the video series is my humble attempt to honour them,” Eros shares.
With Chinazaekpere Chukwu leading the team of writers, The Secret Lives of Nigerian Women chronicles important details about these Nigerian women, who include Funmilayo Ransome Kuti – the influential political and human right activist, Chioma Ajunwa – the first Nigerian gold medalist, Margaret Ekpo – the first Nigerian female politician who pioneered Nigerian women’s activism, Agbani Darego – the first black African woman to win Miss World, Sandra Aguebor Ekperuoh – the first Nigerian female mechanic, and Ladi Dosei – the pioneer of modern pottery.
“As a storyteller and actor, I’m excited and eager for people to know these women and have insightful conversations around them, and I’m hopeful that people will learn about these women and be moved to recommend other influential women who I can spotlight too,” Eros shares with excitement.
The first episode of the monologue series was released on May 23rd, 2024. You can watch it via her Instagram page @kanyineross
