UK Women's Group, Project Linus, Makes 525 Quilts for Hospitalized Children
Ten women from Project Linus North Devon have produced 525 quilts so far this year for the benefit of children receiving treatment at North Devon District Hospital.
The paediatric ward nurses select the quilts that are sent to the kids every month according to their interests and hobbies. Each child undergoing outpatient surgery receives a quilt, and those who will be remaining home for the holidays also receive one for themselves and one for each sibling.
Project Linus is a charity which started in America. Jane Kite, the coordinator for Project Linus North Devon, said: “I am just astounded at how my ladies keep producing the quilts.”
She added: “I am a quilter myself but don’t need any more for my own home. I want to keep making so being able to give them to Project Linus is great.”
While visiting relatives in Ilfracombe last Christmas, eight-year-old George fell ill and spent the holiday at North Devon Hospital due to his uncommon cardiac ailment.
His mum, Alexa, said that by “being so generous to share not only their time but sewing skills, they sprinkled Christmas spirit and happiness over George and us as a family”.
She added: “He has slept with the quilt every day since he received it. "It's a very treasured gift."
