UNICAL: Interim Faculty Dean Assumes Office Following Cyril Ndifon's Sexual Allegations

By Azeezat Okunlola | Aug 23, 2023
Rose Ugbe has been appointed as the acting dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), by Vice Chancellor Florence Obi.

According to a statement released by UNICAL registrar Gabriel Egbe, Ms Ugbe is replacing Cyril Ndifon, the former dean who had been suspended on August 17 for sexual harassment claims and alleged arbitrary behavior.

Earlier, Document Women reported on the protests by female students carrying placards bearing rebuttals against the lewd acts the Dean had allegedly requested of them.

Also, Document Women logged a brief timeline of the outcome following his first indictment, spanning eight years. First indicted on August 29, 2015, Ndifon was accused of beating a student while she retook an exam in his office.

According to the report, Dean Ndifon of the University of Calabar's School of Law was reinstated to his position in February 2021 after being suspended in September 2015. This occurred under the administration of Professor Florence Obi. Document Women has learned from reliable sources that he was again re-elected in May of this year, this time with Prof. Florence Obi at the helm.

The university has formed a seven-person committee to investigate the claims.

Tuesday marked the beginning of Ms. Ugbe's appointment, which will last until a new dean is elected to the faculty. Ms Ugbe would assume the role of dean and be in charge of the academic programs at the faculty.

Further, she would encourage cohesion between the professors and the students, making the classroom a more pleasant place to teach and learn.

Other responsibilities include working with University administration to realise the institution's goal and assisting academic members in their research endeavours.
