By Angel Nduka-Nwosu | Sep 12, 2022

Ladies In Sports International, an organisation launched by Tega Onojaife to celebrate and improve women's sports in Nigeria, recently held a celebratory dinner in honour of the female athletes who won medals for Nigeria at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.

Titled "She Is Greatness", the dinner was held on Friday at the Sheraton Lagos Hotel and also had some of the Paralympics and athletes who topped the tables in the games.

Ms Onojaife said the event was done to encourage further women and young girls who aspired to a career in sports.

The event was held in collaboration with Ex-Big Brother Nigeria star Anto Lecky, was hosted by the actor Olive Emordi and saw attendance from representatives from the British High Commission and women's groups like Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WIMBIZ).

"We want more young girls to aspire to dominate in sports. We hope to educate and empower women in sports," Ms Lecky said, vocalising her desire to see Nigerian women in more significant sports competitions like the FIFA World Cup.

Athletes in attendance included Jacinta Umunnakwe, who won Bronze in the boxing category at the Commonwealth Games, world record holder Goodness Nwachukwu who won Gold in the Discus throw and Ugochi Alam, who won Bronze in the Shot Put category.

Ms Alam spoke of encouraging women in the sports sector,  saying that "asides funding, more of us need support and encouragement to achieve in sports".

She added that events like those organised by Ladies In Sports International are helping to offer support.

In attendance was Khadijah Okunnu-Lamidi, the first woman to declare intentions to run for the 2023 presidential seat in Nigeria.

In August, Document Women talked about the low participation of women in sports.  Sports expert Adeola Adesola elaborated on how government policies influence women's participation in sports.
